Artist Statement

I draw insects and animals in pencil and charcoal, using classical drawing techniques to render. Each piece begins with close observation — often working from life, photographs, or specimens — building up form gradually through layered graphite and charcoal until the creature emerges on the page. I work on paper at a scale that varies by piece, often rendering insects considerably larger than life — a scale shift that reveals details usually invisible to the naked eye.

Each drawing comes from genuine appreciation — for the structure, the mechanics and the ecological complexity held inside a creature most people walk past without noticing. That appreciation exists alongside the friction of living in ways that diminish these creatures, and diminish us along with them. I don't make this work to resolve that tension. I make it to hold both things at once.

These drawings are a reminder that we are not alone on this planet — that the insects and animals around us are not background, but neighbors.
